Nigeria: Tiktok Responds to Reports of Restricted Access in Northern Nigeria

What the report says
TikTok has responded to reports of limited access to its platform in parts of northern Nigeria, saying the disruption was not caused by the company. In a statement reported by Premium Times and distributed by AllAfrica, the platform said it was aware of the issue and was engaging relevant stakeholders to address it. The comments came after weeks of user complaints from Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi and Sokoto states.
According to the report, some users said they could only reach TikTok after turning on a virtual private network, while others described problems such as videos not loading, feeds freezing and uploads failing. The difficulties were said to have started emerging in September, although users in other parts of Nigeria were still able to use the app normally. TikTok did not name the parties it was speaking with and did not give a cause for the disruption.
The reported pattern has prompted questions from digital-rights groups and users about whether the issue stems from a platform problem, a network fault, traffic management or some other restriction. The article notes that VPN access can sometimes bypass connection problems, but that this does not by itself prove who is responsible for the outage. The company did not say when normal access might be restored.
