Nigeria: TCN Declares Force Majeure As Tower Collapses On Kainji-Birnin Kebbi Line

The Transmission Company of Nigeria said it has declared force majeure on the 330kV Kainji-Birnin Kebbi transmission line after a tower along the corridor collapsed. In the account carried by Vanguard and distributed by AllAfrica, the incident followed a line trip late on Monday, September 7, 2026, and a reclosure attempt that also failed. TCN said its field team later found that Tower T367 had fallen.

The company said preliminary findings point to heavy winds and rainstorms as the likely cause of the collapse. The damage disrupted bulk electricity transmission through the Kainji-Birnin Kebbi corridor, prompting TCN to classify the situation as a force majeure event tied to a natural disaster. TCN said it was mobilizing personnel, equipment and other resources to the site to repair the tower and restore the line as soon as possible.

TCN also said electricity supply to Sokoto had been maintained through an alternative route. According to the statement, power was being redirected via the Talata Mafara-Sokoto corridor from the Kaduna-Mando axis, using the 132kV Zaria-Funtua-Gusau line as a substitute path. The company apologized for the disruption and said it was working to return the transmission system to normal service. The development matters because the corridor is part of the grid infrastructure serving northwestern Nigeria and interruptions can affect both utilities and consumers.
