What the report says

At least 10 soldiers and four civilians are feared dead after suspected Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters attacked a military base in Mairari, Borno State, according to Daily Trust, as distributed by AllAfrica. The assault took place last Tuesday in Guzamala Local Government Area, about 120 to 130 kilometers north of Maiduguri, and involved what the report described as a coordinated and lengthy gun battle.

Security sources quoted by the paper said the attackers came in large numbers and that troops resisted for hours before the assailants caused heavy losses and destroyed military equipment, including gun trucks and other operational vehicles used by both soldiers and the Civilian Joint Task Force. A resident who fled the area said more than 11 people were killed and several vehicles were burned. The chairman of Guzamala confirmed that the attack occurred, but did not give casualty figures.

The report said communication blackouts in the area delayed public knowledge of the incident. It also noted that Mairari is strategically important because it has remained one of the few settlements in the area to withstand repeated insurgent attacks, while the official local government headquarters remains in insurgent-held Gudumbali. The military had not issued a formal casualty update at the time of reporting.

The same Daily Trust report also said troops in Sokoto State killed several Lakurawa fighters in Waria Forest during an October 15 operation under Operation Fansan Yamma, recovering weapons and five motorcycles. As background, the Lake Chad area has faced years of insurgent violence, shifting control, and repeated security operations.
