What the report says

Nigeria’s state oil company says the country’s crude output has risen by about 600,000 barrels per day since the Petroleum Industry Act began taking effect, lifting production from roughly 1.2 million bpd to 1.8 million bpd. The comments were made by NNPC Limited Group Chief Executive Officer Bashir Bayo Ojulari at the 2026 Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, according to Vanguard, which was carried by AllAfrica.

Ojulari linked the increase to the 2021 PIA, a more attractive investment climate, improved decision-making and closer cooperation between NNPC and its partners. He said the current level of output is a step toward Nigeria’s longer-term goal of reaching 2 million bpd by 2027, with attention on maintaining infrastructure, protecting existing production and bringing new projects onstream.

He also pointed to related energy-sector developments, including the expansion of compressed natural gas conversion centres after fuel subsidy removal and progress on major gas infrastructure. Those projects include the OB3 pipeline, which he said was completed in August 2026, and the AKK pipeline, which he said is expected to begin delivering gas to Abuja before the end of the year. He added that NNPC is targeting higher national gas production by 2027 and 2030, supported by domestic and export markets.

The report further said NNPC has discussed major investment plans with international partners, including projects involving TotalEnergies, Shell and Eni, and that commercial agreements covering about $20 billion have been concluded. More broadly, the company is presenting these reforms as part of Nigeria’s effort to attract capital, strengthen energy supply and expand both oil and gas output.
