He warned that unchecked political desperation could heighten violence and deepen instability. His comments come as political actors begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The SCDDD delegation was led by former Chief Justice of Nigeria Olukayode Ariwoola. He called on presidential candidates to avoid hate speech, inflammatory language and any conduct that could encourage violence during campaigns. Ariwoola also pointed to Nigeria’s history of election-related unrest and criticized practices such as thuggery, vote buying, rigging and ballot stuffing.

The council said political leaders should follow Independent National Electoral Commission rules closely to rebuild public trust in elections. More broadly, the exchange reflects continuing debate in Nigeria over electoral reform, party discipline and how to reduce the risk of violence during campaigns and voting.
