What the report says

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command says it rescued a group of fishermen abducted by suspected sea pirates and separately arrested two people accused of vandalizing electricity infrastructure. The cases were announced by Commissioner of Police Baba Mohammed Azare at a press briefing in Uyo, the state capital, according to Daily Trust, which was distributed by AllAfrica.

Police said the fishermen, including one Ghanaian national, were attacked while traveling toward the Atlantic Ocean along waterways in Ibeno Local Government Area. Personnel from the Asawana Mobile Police Base reportedly recovered the victims unharmed near the boundary between Akwa Ibom and Rivers states after a gunfight with the suspected pirates. Officers also recovered boats, outboard engines, fuel containers, mobile phones and other items said to have been found at the scene.

In a separate operation, police identified the suspects as Chinedu Onwe and Enobong Jonah. Authorities allege they helped strip components from a community transformer in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area and moved the stolen materials in a tricycle and then a red minibus. Police said the suspects fled into nearby bush after their vehicle was intercepted along the Etinan route.

The incidents highlight continuing security concerns in coastal waterways and in the protection of power installations in parts of southern Nigeria. As reported by Daily Trust, the command presented the arrests as part of broader enforcement efforts, but the suspects have not been shown in court in the material provided.
