AllAfrica, carrying a Premium Times report with News Agency of Nigeria material, reported that Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has created a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to examine the abduction of pupils and teachers from Esinele and Yawota communities in Oriire Local Government Area. The announcement was made Thursday in Ibadan by Dotun Oyelade, the state commissioner for information and civic orientation. The panel is scheduled for inauguration on Friday.

According to the report, the abduction took place on 15 May, and the victims were freed on 10 July after 56 days in captivity. Oyelade said the commission will investigate how the incident happened, identify what enabled the security failure, review the conduct of relevant authorities, and propose steps to better protect schools and communities in Oyo State.

The inquiry follows repeated public expressions of doubt by Makinde about the circumstances of the kidnapping. Premium Times reported that, after the victims were released, the governor linked the timing of the incident to his declaration of interest in Nigeria’s 2027 presidential race under the Allied Peoples Movement, saying it occurred hours after that announcement. He has also called for scrutiny by the United Nations and other international human rights and accountability bodies, arguing that the case raised questions requiring independent review.

The Oyo State House of Assembly supported Makinde’s call for an international investigation, while Nigeria’s Senate rejected foreign intervention, saying the matter should be treated as a domestic security issue. The new state-level commission is therefore significant because it represents a formal mechanism within Oyo to test the facts, assess official response, and recommend safeguards after a major school-security incident.
