The development comes amid conflicting claims about what happened near the Okrika pipeline and jetty corridor. It also warned against vandalism, illegal access to petroleum facilities and scooping fuel from pipelines.

Indorama Petrochemical Limited rejected reports linking its facility to the deaths. A company representative said the area under discussion was heavily secured and argued that the refinery and jetty are separated by a significant distance. Residents and community members, however, gave mixed accounts: some denied seeing a major fire or mass casualty, while others said the dead were fishermen caught near a creek and exposed to a blast or harmful substance.

A local rights group, the Health of Mother Earth Foundation, called for an independent investigation and urged authorities to establish the true casualty count and cause. The dispute highlights ongoing risks around oil infrastructure in the Niger Delta, where communities have long faced hazards from pipeline operations, illegal refining, and weak emergency response.
