Nigeria: Oil Spill Hits 216 Delta Communities, Fish Prices Rise

What the report says
An oil spill along the Trans-Forcados Pipeline in Delta State has disrupted fishing and pushed up fish prices in 216 communities, according to a Vanguard report distributed by AllAfrica. The report said the spill has affected livelihoods in riverine areas, where fishing is a major source of income and food supply.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori visited Odidi community in Warri South-West Local Government Area on Tuesday and ordered immediate medical checks for residents who may have been exposed to pollution. He also directed the state health commissioner to send medical teams to the affected communities and said the response should include health screening, environmental assessment and broader intervention, not only relief items.
The governor said the number of affected communities had grown from an earlier figure of 86 to 216 and stressed that the crisis involves environmental cleanup, public health and livelihood recovery. He also urged Heritage Energy Operational Services Limited, the pipeline operator, to provide medical support and relief materials, and said the company had indicated that technical work and cleanup could be completed before the end of October, after which compensation discussions would follow.
The report also noted calls from local youth leaders for stronger action, including remediation and support for residents reporting breathing problems. As immediate support measures, the governor approved a jetty for Odidi and asked local authorities to build a modern health centre for the community.
