The Nigerian Army said its official X account was targeted in an attempted unauthorised access incident, according to a report published by Vanguard and distributed by AllAfrica. The account, which is used for official military communication, was seen posting memecoin-related content before the issue was identified as a cybersecurity breach. Acting Director of Army Public Relations Appolonia Anele confirmed the incident in a statement shared on the Army’s Facebook page.

Anele said the Army had activated technical and protective steps to secure the account, block further access, and preserve the integrity of information shared through the platform. She also said efforts were under way to restore exclusive administrative control. The Army urged the public, the media and other stakeholders to ignore suspicious or unverified posts from the affected account and to rely on other official channels for updates until the matter is resolved.

The report said it was not immediately clear whether full control had been regained when the article was published. It also noted that the incident came about two weeks after Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters said its own X account had been compromised. More broadly, the episode highlights the vulnerability of official social media accounts, especially those used for security and public-information duties.
