What the report says

Agribusiness leaders in Nigeria are set to use a regional conference in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, to press the case for greater investment in processing and export capacity rather than continued reliance on raw commodity sales. According to Premium Times, the fifth Agribusiness Roundtable International Conference is scheduled for 25 to 28 October and will bring together government officials, investors, development partners, producers, processors, technology providers and financial institutions.

The organisers say the meeting will focus on ways to strengthen agricultural value chains across Africa, including financing, market access, mechanisation, storage, packaging, cold-chain systems and climate-smart farming. Howard Usen, who chairs the central planning committee, said the event is intended to help create commercial partnerships and connect project developers with potential financiers and off-takers. The conference theme points to food security, job creation, poverty reduction and broader national prosperity.

The report places the event in the context of Nigeria’s wider effort to convert agricultural output into industrial growth and jobs. It also notes recent policy and investment interest in the Niger Delta, including a proposed agricultural development and investment fund reported earlier by Premium Times. Akwa Ibom authorities are expected to use the conference to highlight the state’s own agricultural potential and investment roadmap.

More broadly, the Uyo gathering reflects a common challenge across parts of Africa: abundant farm production does not automatically translate into jobs or higher value without processing, logistics and financing. The organisers say they hope the conference will lead to practical business deals, market links and new projects.
