Nigeria Health Watch has launched a Health Manifesto Tracker to monitor health promises made by political parties and candidates ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. The tool was unveiled in Abuja during a breakfast meeting focused on accountability and citizen engagement, bringing together government, civil society, development partners, health advocates and media representatives to discuss how healthcare can be treated as a campaign issue.

According to the report from Premium Times, the tracker is intended to document, analyse and later assess whether election-season commitments on health are specific, measurable and achievable. The organisation said it plans to use publicly available government data, dashboards and other evidence after the elections to follow implementation, while also allowing citizens to submit feedback and questions about pledges made by political actors.

Nigeria Health Watch said the initiative is meant to push parties and candidates beyond broad promises and toward clearer plans on topics such as primary healthcare, maternal health, vaccines, medicines and health insurance. The group also linked the launch to its broader #Vote4HealthNaija campaign, which aims to make health a more visible election issue among voters, policymakers and the press.

At the meeting, the organisation also highlighted low public spending on health in Nigeria and the gap between budget allocations and actual delivery. More broadly, the effort reflects a common election-accountability approach used in civic advocacy: pressing candidates to state not only what they support, but how and when they would act if elected.
