Nigeria: NDLEA Dismantles Industrial Meth Lab, Arrests Mexican Drug Kingpin in Lagos

Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency said it has dismantled an industrial-scale methamphetamine laboratory and arrested a Mexican national, Arturo Carrera Loaiza, whom it described as a leading figure in a broader network operating in Nigeria. The report, carried by This Day and distributed by AllAfrica, said Loaiza was detained on August 19 at Lagos airport as he tried to leave the country, after investigators linked him to earlier discoveries of clandestine drug sites in Ogun and Oyo states.

According to the NDLEA briefing in Lagos on September 15, investigators believe the case grew out of months of work by the agency’s Special Operations Unit. The agency said earlier raids in Ogun and Oyo had already led to arrests of Mexican and Nigerian suspects and to the recovery of methamphetamine and precursor chemicals. NDLEA officials said evidence from those cases, including witness accounts, photographs and CCTV material, helped them trace a suspected laboratory to a property under construction in Ebonyi State.

The agency said chemicals and equipment were later moved from that site to another location, where additional materials were recovered in a subsequent raid. Those items reportedly included solvents, acids, dehydrators and production equipment associated with meth manufacture. NDLEA chairman Mohamed Buba Marwa said the operation showed the agency’s ability to disrupt transnational drug groups and prevent Nigeria from becoming a base for clandestine laboratories.

The case matters because it points to an alleged cross-border drug-production network using rural and forested areas across several states. The NDLEA also urged residents to report suspicious structures, chemical smells and unusual activity in their communities.
