Nigeria: NAFDAC Orders Recall of Sachet Alcohol Drinks Below 200ml

Nigeria’s National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has ordered manufacturers to recall alcoholic drinks packaged in sachets and in containers smaller than 200 millilitres, according to Vanguard reporting distributed by AllAfrica. The directive applies to products already on the market and requires companies to account for the affected stock and destroy it under NAFDAC supervision, with the cost to be borne by the manufacturers.

The agency said the move is intended to remove small-volume alcoholic products that are now prohibited and to reduce their availability, especially for younger consumers. NAFDAC also warned that manufacturers, distributors and other businesses that fail to comply could face regulatory penalties. The action follows the end of a transition period that had allowed producers time to adjust before the ban took full effect on January 1, 2026.

The enforcement comes as the Federal Government launched the Nigeria Alcohol Policy and its multisectoral implementation plan for 2026-2030 in Abuja. In the report, health officials said harmful alcohol use and unregulated alcohol products remain public health concerns and stressed the need for cooperation across government, industry and civil society. More broadly, the policy signals a stronger regulatory push to curb alcohol-related harm and promote responsible consumption in Nigeria.
