What the report says
Lagos teacher Busayo Adeyemo has won the 2026 Maltina Teacher of the Year award, according to Premium Times, which was distributed by AllAfrica. The announcement was made at the 12th edition of the competition in Lagos, organized by the Nigerian Breweries-Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund (NB-FOETF).
Adeyemo, who teaches at Lanre Awolokun High School in Gbagada, received a N10 million cash prize, a Honda HR-V, an overseas capacity-building trip, a year’s supply of Maltina, and a N30 million school infrastructure project in her honour. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu also gave her a three-bedroom apartment. The report says she additionally won the Maltina Prize for Best STEM Teacher, worth another N1.5 million.
The event highlighted broader support for education and teacher recognition in Nigeria. Premium Times reported that the competition drew 2,510 entries from across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, with 2,243 valid submissions. Other top awardees included first runner-up Yusuf Cariyat and second runner-up Ephraim Inyangudo, while 17 state champions received N1 million each.
Officials at the ceremony, including representatives of President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of Education, praised the initiative as a way to reward teachers and encourage investment in classrooms and learning facilities. The organisers said the award scheme, launched in 2015, has become a national platform for recognising teaching talent and supporting school development.
