What the report says

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of Nigeria’s Democratic Congress, said he would work closely with his running mate, Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso, if elected in 2027. According to Vanguard’s report distributed by AllAfrica, Obi made the remarks on Thursday at a town hall meeting in Enugu, where he spoke to supporters and other stakeholders about his campaign vision and the country’s problems.

Obi said that security would be a central priority for his administration, with a focus on restoring safety and protecting lives and property across Nigeria. He also criticised the current government’s record on public safety and urged voters, particularly in the South-East, to back what he described as a more capable ticket. In addition, he said he would declare an emergency on education to address the problem of children outside school.

Kwankwaso also addressed the gathering, warning against ethnic division and pointing to insecurity, unemployment, poverty and hunger as major national challenges. He called for unity, discipline and active participation in the voting process. The report said Senator Victor Umeh praised the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket and expressed confidence that it could win support across regions, including the South-East. The comments come as political positioning intensifies ahead of Nigeria’s next presidential race, although the election is still more than a year away.
