Nigeria: Hundreds Scoop Spilled Groundnut Oil After Tanker Crashed in Lagos

What the report says
Daily Trust reported that hundreds of people gathered on Wednesday after a tanker carrying 33,000 litres of groundnut oil overturned near Abiola Garden on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Lagos, spilling the edible oil across the road and slowing traffic. The accident happened inward Old Toll Gate, according to the article, and left the carriageway obstructed while residents, traders and food vendors rushed to collect the product.
Lagos State Traffic Management Authority officials warned that oil recovered from the road, drainage channels and other exposed areas could be unsafe to eat or sell because it may have been contaminated by debris and other pollutants. The agency said people should avoid consuming or marketing the recovered oil to reduce possible health risks. The report also said preliminary security information pointed to suspected brake failure as the cause of the crash.
LASTMA said it deployed its rescue and recovery team, along with tow vehicles, to remove the tanker and restore movement on the busy route. Traffic personnel were positioned along the corridor to help manage congestion and guide diversions. Other agencies mentioned in the response included the police, road safety officials, petroleum workers, the fire and rescue service, and neighbourhood safety personnel. The incident highlights how tanker crashes on major Nigerian highways can quickly create both traffic and public health concerns.
