Nigeria: Glasgow 2026 Day 4 - Team Nigeria Eyes More Medals As Athletics, Weightlifting Take Centre Stage

AllAfrica, carrying a Premium Times report from Abuja by Tunde Eludini, reported that Team Nigeria entered Day Four of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on Monday with several medal chances across athletics, weightlifting, swimming, para athletics and wheelchair basketball. The report said Nigeria had already collected seven medals at the Games: three gold and four silver.

According to Premium Times, Nigeria’s early success has been led by para powerlifting. Esther Nworgu, Folashade Oluwafemiayo and Riluwan Idris were listed as gold medallists, while Roland Ezuruike, Esther Oyema and Rita Ferdinand earned silver. Ruth Asuquo Nyong also added a silver medal in the women’s 48kg weightlifting event.

The Monday schedule shifts attention to the track, where national champion Favour Ashe is due to run in Heat One of the men’s 100m first round, with Nicholas Fakorede in Heat 10. Miracle Ezechukwu is entered in Heat Eight of the women’s 100m, while Oyesade Olatoye is scheduled for women’s hammer throw qualification. In weightlifting, the report named Edidiong Umoafia in the men’s 71kg final, alongside Onome Didih, Rafiatu Lawal and Adedapo Opadeji as contenders in their respective categories.

Premium Times also reported that Clinton Opute, Collins Obi Ebingha and Abduljabar Adama are set for the men’s 100m freestyle heats, while Dorcas Oka returns in the women’s 50m breaststroke. In para athletics, Eucharia Iyiazi is entered for the women’s F57 shot put final, and Nigeria’s women’s 3x3 wheelchair basketball team faces India in Group B. The busy programme gives Nigeria multiple opportunities to extend a strong opening to the Games.
