Nigeria: FERMA Restores Roads, Bridges in Delta

What the report says

The Federal Roads Maintenance Agency said it has repaired damaged stretches of federal roads and stabilized an erosion-threatened bridge in Delta State, according to Daily Trust, distributed by AllAfrica. The work was presented as part of FERMA’s effort to keep key transport routes open and safer for motorists and other road users.

The report said the interventions covered the 38-kilometre Kwale-Ebedei-Umutu Road and the Okumeshi Bridge section. FERMA’s Delta State roads engineer, Kingsley Oshewe, said crews used direct labour on parts of the Kwale-Ebedei-Umutu corridor, with work including removal of failed pavement, filling, compaction, stone-base placement, priming and asphalt surfacing.

Daily Trust reported that the agency also inspected the bridge section between Ebedei and Umukuata communities in Ukwuani Local Government Area, where embankment washout had endangered the carriageway. FERMA said it responded by building a reinforced concrete retaining wall, backfilling with laterite and adding stone pitching to limit further erosion.

The monitoring visit took place on Wednesday and was led by Dr Emeka Maduagwu, a special assistant to FERMA’s managing director. The repairs matter because the roads and bridge link communities and support the movement of people, goods and farm produce, a point the agency emphasized in describing the project.
