What the report says

The Enugu State Police Command says its Violent Crime Response Unit has arrested 182 suspects, rescued 31 kidnapped victims and recovered 57 firearms, including 13 AK-47 rifles, since the unit was created in April 2026. According to Vanguard’s report distributed by AllAfrica, Commissioner of Police Mamman Bitrus Giwa presented the figures at the unit’s formal launch in Enugu, where senior police officers and other stakeholders were in attendance.

The command said the arrests covered alleged offences such as armed robbery, kidnapping, unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, cultism, and drug and substance trafficking. It also reported the recovery of 669 rounds of live ammunition and 44 vehicles, including cars, tricycles and motorcycles. Giwa said many of the suspects had already been prosecuted.

The Inspector-General of Police, represented at the event by the Zone 13 assistant inspector-general, described the unit as part of a broader push toward intelligence-led policing and better protection of lives and property. The commissioner said the unit includes specialized teams for armed robbery, terrorism-related offences, kidnapping, cultism and drug trafficking, along with internal oversight and media liaison functions.

The launch also highlighted the role of the state government and a civilian oversight board. Police leadership praised Governor Peter Mbah’s support for security logistics, while the oversight board said it would help promote accountability and community feedback. The development matters because it signals a strengthened anti-violent-crime operation in a state that has faced security concerns typical of Nigeria’s wider kidnapping and armed robbery challenges.
