What the report says

Ekiti State has begun a fare-reduction drive by introducing 15 compressed natural gas (CNG) buses, with Governor Biodun Oyebanji saying the initiative is intended to ease transport costs for residents. The rollout was reported by Premium Times and distributed by AllAfrica, with the launch taking place in Ado Ekiti at the Ekiti State Transportation Agency premises. The timing of the flag-off was linked to Nigeria’s Independence Day and the state’s 30th anniversary.

According to the report, the state government says the buses are part of a broader effort to make public transport more affordable and accessible. Oyebanji said the vehicles were donated by the federal government and described the deployment as consistent with President Bola Tinubu’s call for governors to reduce transportation costs. He also urged transport unions to pass the savings on to commuters.

The governor said the rollout is only a first step and that the state plans to expand the fleet. Officials also said routes have been set for interstate travel from Ado Ekiti to cities including Lagos, Ibadan, Onitsha and Abuja. The move is significant because transport prices can affect the cost of daily life and the price of goods, so lower fares may ease pressure on households if the program is implemented as announced.
