Nigeria: Editors Raise Alarm Over Harassment, Prosecution of Journalists

The Nigerian Guild of Editors has warned that rising harassment, intimidation and prosecution of journalists by security agencies could weaken press freedom and legitimate reporting. In a communiqué from its Standing Committee meeting in Kano, the guild said some officials were relying on cybercrime and other laws in ways that may curb normal journalistic work. The statement was signed by NGE President Eze Anaba and General Secretary Onuoha Ukeh, according to Daily Trust, which reported the remarks on 15 September 2026.

The editors urged the Federal Government and the Independent National Electoral Commission to ensure fair conditions for all parties and candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections. They also called for an environment where campaigns can take place freely, including lawful display of party symbols and slogans, while asking political actors to avoid inflammatory rhetoric. The guild said INEC and other election bodies should treat ruling and opposition parties equally.

The NGE further appealed to governments and the public to respect journalists and use the Media Ombudsman mechanism, set up by major media bodies in Nigeria, rather than threats or violence when there are complaints. It also asked the media to maintain high standards of accuracy and fairness.

Beyond media freedom, the editors commented on the economy, federal road conditions and national security. They encouraged the government to keep reforms going while protecting citizens’ welfare, urged repairs to deteriorating roads, and praised security agencies for gains against terrorism, banditry and other crimes. The meeting was held in Kano, and the guild thanked the state government for hosting it.
