Nigeria: Diphtheria - Kano Govt Takes Active Case Search to Communities With Reported Deaths

The Kano State Government has widened its diphtheria response into communities in Rano Local Government Area after reports of child deaths in Rurum Ward, according to Daily Trust, distributed by AllAfrica. The intervention followed a rumour that 50 children had died, a number the Kano State Centre for Disease Control later said was not supported by its investigation.

The State Rapid Response Team, working with the Rano LGA response team, examined several communities and health facilities in the ward. The investigation found four deaths in total, with two linked to diphtheria and two others connected to suspected malaria and typhoid fever. Officials also identified active and recovered cases during the field search, including a situation in Sabon Gari A where one active case and one death were found in the same household, prompting urgent contact tracing.

The report said the search covered Rurum Tsohon Gari, Sabuwar Kaura, Sabon Gari A and Sakkwatawa, and included visits to community leaders and the Emir of Rano Emirate Council to encourage prompt reporting, care-seeking and immunisation. The KNCDC said several affected children had no documented vaccination history, pointing to immunity gaps in the area. It also flagged delays in seeking care and reliance on traditional healers as public-health risks.

As immediate steps, authorities increased mosque-based awareness efforts, supplied medicines to identified cases and reinforced the diphtheria treatment centre at Rano Emirate Hospital. More broadly, the report underscores how quickly vaccine-preventable diseases can spread where surveillance and immunisation coverage are weak.
