Nigeria deny Egypt sweep at ITTF Africa Youth Champs

The Punch reported that Nigeria stopped Egypt from taking all four team titles at the 2026 ITTF Africa Youth Championships, with the Nigerian boys’ U-19 side retaining their crown in Accra on Wednesday. Led by Quadri Atunwon, Nigeria recovered from a 2-0 deficit in the final to beat Egypt 3-2 and claim gold in the category.

According to the report, Egypt won the first two matches before Sultan Agunbiade kept Nigeria in contention with a win. Matthew Kuti then levelled the tie, rebounding from an earlier narrow loss to Yassin Gaber by defeating Abdelmalk Elsayed 3-1. The title came down to Atunwon against Gaber, with Atunwon eventually winning the deciding fifth game 16-14 after giving up an 8-2 lead and saving two championship points.

Egypt still had the strongest overall team-event showing, winning the other three titles. In the boys’ U-15 final, Nigeria reached the title match after a 3-2 semi-final win over hosts Ghana, but Egypt won the final 3-0. The Punch named Ahmed Elsabbagh, Asser Sameh and Hussein Eyad as the Egyptian players who secured the victories against Marvelous Joseph, Usman Ayoola and Samson Joshua.

The report added that Egypt regained the girls’ U-15 title by beating Tunisia 3-1 and defended the girls’ U-19 title with a 3-0 win over Algeria. The results underline Egypt’s continued strength in African youth table tennis, while Nigeria’s U-19 boys’ victory preserved one major title and denied Egypt a complete sweep of the team competitions.
