Nigeria: Dangote Refinery Expands Free Fuel Delivery to Kano, Imo, Others, Targets Lower Pump Prices

Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals has expanded its free fuel delivery programme to Kano, Imo, Anambra and Nasarawa states, broadening a scheme that had already covered Lagos, Ogun, Rivers, Kaduna, Delta and Abuja. The report said the company is absorbing transport costs so independent marketers can receive products without bearing long-haul delivery expenses, with the stated aim of easing distribution bottlenecks and creating room for lower pump prices.

The move was announced by Fatima Aliko-Dangote, the refinery’s Group Executive Director for Commercial Operations, Oil & Gas, WAEP and Fertiliser. According to the report, she said the effort is meant to ensure the gains from domestic refining reach businesses and consumers beyond the refinery gate. The company framed the initiative as a way to reduce avoidable costs in the downstream supply chain and improve the efficiency of fuel distribution across Nigeria.

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria welcomed the expansion. IPMAN’s national publicity secretary, Chinedu Ukadike, said the arrangement could ease cash-flow pressure on marketers, shorten delays in loading products and reduce the logistics burden of moving fuel over long distances. He said those savings could help support lower retail prices.

The development comes as Nigeria’s downstream sector adjusts to a larger role for local refining. In general, when refiners take on delivery costs, retail fuel prices can become more competitive, especially in far-flung markets where transport expenses are usually significant.
