Nigeria: Court Sentences Man to Death By Hanging for Murder of Kano Housewife

AllAfrica, carrying a Premium Times report attributed to the News Agency of Nigeria, reported that the Kano State High Court has sentenced Shuaibu Abdulkadir to death by hanging after convicting him of culpable homicide in the killing of 23-year-old Rumasa'u Shuaibu. The judgment was delivered in Kano on Friday by Justice Farida Rabiu-Danbappa.

According to the report, prosecutors said the offence occurred on 6 April 2025 at Farawa Quarters in Kano. Abdulkadir, described as a resident of Chediyar Kuda in Shauchi Quarters, had been charged under Section 221 of the Penal Code. Prosecutor Basiru Kabiru-Ali told the court that the victim was a friend of Abdulkadir’s girlfriend.

The prosecution called three witnesses and submitted seven exhibits, including what was described as a confessional statement, a photograph and the deceased’s mobile phone. Justice Rabiu-Danbappa held that the case had been established beyond reasonable doubt and informed the convict that he had 90 days to appeal.

The report said Abdulkadir denied the allegation and testified in his own defence. His lawyer, Mustapha Idris, asked the court for leniency, describing him as a first-time offender who had shown remorse. The case is significant because it involves a capital sentence in a Nigerian state court; any further development would depend on whether the convict pursues an appeal through the legal process.
