Nigeria: Court Jails Two Ansaru Commanders for Life Over Terrorism

AllAfrica, carrying a Premium Times report from Abuja, reported that the Federal High Court in Nigeria’s capital sentenced two suspected Ansaru commanders to life imprisonment on Monday after they admitted to terrorism-related charges. The defendants were identified as Abubakar Abba, also known as Abu Bara’a, and Mahmud Usman, also known as Isah Adam and Mahmud. They had previously denied the allegations but changed their pleas to guilty before Justice Emeka Nwite delivered judgment.

According to the report, the State Security Service prosecuted the men on behalf of the federal government. They faced 32 counts, including terrorism, terrorism financing, kidnapping for ransom, illegal mining, funding terrorism, making improvised explosive devices and other related offences. The court imposed life sentences on counts 30 and 31, and 20-year terms on the remaining counts, with the terms to run from the date of arrest. The report said Nigerian security forces captured the men last year.

Premium Times reported that the case began with their arraignment on 11 September 2025. Proceedings were delayed at one stage after defence lawyer Bala Dakum said SSS officials had denied him access to the defendants. The prosecution later called an SSS operative, identified by the codename “Triple A,” who testified that the defendants confessed to weapons training in Libya, membership of Ansaru and links with extremist groups operating in the Sahel and Maghreb.

The judgment is significant in Nigeria’s long-running effort to prosecute terrorism cases linked to armed groups. Ansaru is generally known as a jihadist faction associated with violent activity in northern Nigeria, though the specific findings in this case are those reported from the court proceedings by Premium Times.
