Nigeria: Call for Pitches - People-Centred Investigative Reporting On Peace and Public Safety

The Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) has opened a call for pitches from journalists and investigative reporters for stories on peace and public safety in Nigeria. Announced through AllAfrica on 24 August 2026, the initiative seeks original, underreported, and solutions-focused reporting that looks at how communities prevent violence, resolve disputes, rebuild trust, and hold institutions accountable.

CJID said the call is meant to move beyond the usual focus on military and policing responses to insecurity. It is especially interested in proposals on grassroots safety efforts, including community policing, traditional peace-building systems, early warning mechanisms, and other local protections that may help reduce violence. Other suggested angles include failures in public safety systems, abuse by security forces, the role of private military activity, corruption and resource-related drivers of conflict, and the effects of insecurity on displaced people, women, young people, and marginalized groups.

The call gives priority to reporters based in or able to work safely in Benue and Bayelsa states. Applicants must be professional journalists with a recognized newsroom and a record of investigative or accountability reporting. Selected journalists will receive reporting support, editorial mentorship, and possible publication or amplification through CJID and partner platforms, subject to editorial standards.

The application deadline is 11 September 2026. CJID is an Abuja-based media innovation and development organization that says it works to strengthen democracy, accountability, and human rights through journalism support and civic technology.
