What the report says

Daily Trust, as republished by AllAfrica, reported that suspected bandits attacked rural communities in Niger State between October 9 and 12, 2026, leaving five farmers dead, 18 people abducted and homes, shops and other property burned. The main incidents were reported in Fanga community in Mashegu Local Government Area, along with Kigbere and Kokani in Borgu Local Government Area. The article said the latest assault in Fanga happened on Monday after attackers allegedly demanded large cash levies from residents who were unable to pay.

According to a resident quoted by Daily Trust, the attackers entered the community in the afternoon, set buildings and a truck on fire, stole food items and took women and children among the abducted. The source said repeated extortion attempts had left the area deserted, with schooling disrupted and farmland no longer accessible. The report also said residents in nearby Rukukuje in Rijau Local Government Area fled after reports that armed men were moving through the area from Zamfara State.

Daily Trust described panic spreading across parts of the Rijau axis as families crossed into safer locations, including the local government headquarters and neighboring Zamfara. A video circulating online reportedly showed residents leaving with belongings and motorcycles. The paper said the region has faced continuing insecurity linked to bandit activity across the Zamfara border, despite security operations aimed at containing the threat. The Niger State police spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment.
