Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum said the Boko Haram insurgency destroyed more than 5,000 school structures in the state and left about 2.2 million children out of school at the height of the crisis, according to Daily Trust via AllAfrica. He made the remarks in Maiduguri on Sunday during a ceremony where Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi A. Sule commissioned several projects.

The projects included a flyover, two schools and a dual carriage road with drainage, reflecting ongoing rebuilding work in Borno’s capital. Zulum said the damage went beyond buildings, noting that teachers and school administrators also died while carrying out their duties. He framed reconstruction as part of restoring education access and public confidence, not just replacing damaged facilities.

Zulum also said the state government had invested more than N46 billion in basic and secondary education across the 2025 and 2026 fiscal years. He said the effort is tied to a wider education programme that includes dozens of completed projects awaiting commissioning. According to the figures he cited, usable classrooms, WASH facilities and school enrollment have all risen sharply since 2019. If accurate, the numbers point to the scale of recovery in a state that was among the hardest hit by the insurgency.
