What the report says

The Nigerian Army has altered its security deployment around Kebbe Local Government Area in Sokoto State after an attack in the area and intelligence suggesting the suspected assailants were still nearby, according to Premium Times via AllAfrica. The move followed a Sunday assessment visit by Major General Bemgha Koughna, the General Officer Commanding 8 Division, to a Forward Operating Base in Kebbe and surrounding communities.

The army said the review led to a readjustment of its security posture along the Sokoto-Kebbi axis, with the aim of limiting further infiltration and strengthening protection for vulnerable communities. A military spokesperson later clarified that the focus was not on a new attack in Ungushi, but on intelligence indicating the terrorists had remained close to the area after Friday’s assault.

During the visit, Koughna met local leaders and residents to hear concerns and assess the security situation. The army said he assured them that troops remained deployed and alert, and urged people to stay calm, continue lawful activities, and share credible information about suspicious movement.

The wider context is continued military pressure on armed groups in northwestern Nigeria, including operations under Operation FANSAN YAMMA. Premium Times also reported that the Sokoto State Police said reinforcements were sent after the Kebbe attack, while questions about possible casualties among soldiers were not confirmed in the army’s latest statement.
