Nigeria: Armed 'Bandits' Kill More Than 20 in Zamfara State

AllAfrica, carrying a Deutsche Welle report with AFP, reported that more than 20 people were killed when armed men attacked several villages in Talata Mafara, in Nigeria’s northern Zamfara state, on Wednesday, July 23, 2026. The account cited Nasiru Lauwali, a local councilor for Sauna district, as saying 21 people died, while district secretary Alhaji Shehu Garba put the toll at 23 across five villages.

The report said three other people with gunshot wounds were taken to a hospital in neighboring Sokoto state. Citing local residents who spoke to SaharaReporters, DW reported that the raid began around 2 p.m. and continued for about three hours. Some residents alleged that security forces did not intervene. The attackers were also reported to have stolen a large number of livestock.

DW described the assailants as part of the armed gangs commonly called “bandits” in Nigeria, who remain a persistent threat across the country’s northwest and central regions. Such groups are widely associated with village raids, cattle theft and kidnappings for ransom, and the violence has placed heavy pressure on rural communities and local security authorities.

The report distinguished the Zamfara attacks from the separate jihadist insurgency in northeastern Nigeria led by Boko Haram. DW noted that bandit groups are generally driven by financial gain rather than a declared ideology, while jihadist violence in Nigeria has targeted both Muslims and Christians. The latest killings underscore the continuing insecurity in Zamfara, a state that has repeatedly faced mass attacks and abductions.
