Nigeria: APC Petitions Police to Arrest, Prosecute Hunye Over Ogun Governorship Claim

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has asked Nigeria’s police chief to investigate, arrest and prosecute Abayomi Hunye over his claim that he is the party’s governorship candidate in Ogun State. The petition, filed on 24 August and reported by Premium Times, says Hunye is falsely presenting himself as the APC nominee for the January 2027 election and is allegedly misleading the public.

According to the party, Hunye was suspended from APC membership in April after a complaint from his ward in Ipokia Local Government Area, and that suspension was later upheld within the party’s structures. The APC says this means he has no authority to speak or act for the party. It also says it has already completed its governorship primary and nominated Ogun West senator Solomon Olamilekan, known as Yayi, with Kudirat Balogun as running mate, and that those particulars were submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The dispute reflects a wider internal fight over the party’s 2027 ticket in Ogun State. APC leaders in the state and at the national level have publicly backed Olamilekan and warned against dealings with Hunye on the nomination. Hunye, however, says he is challenging the primary in court and argues that he should not be treated as an impostor. As reported by Premium Times, the APC says it wants police intervention to prevent the row from escalating into a public order problem.
