Nigeria: 36 Governors Reaffirm Commitment to Early Childhood Development

Nigeria’s 36 state governors have reaffirmed their support for making early childhood development a priority in the country’s human capital agenda, according to a report carried by Leadership and distributed by AllAfrica. The message was delivered at a North-West zonal consultative workshop on early childhood development, where the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) worked with the World Bank, Human Capital Development, and the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning.

The NGF Secretariat said the early years, from pregnancy through age five, are critical for shaping health, learning, cognition and later productivity. Its director-general, represented at the event by the forum’s media and strategic communications director, said the issue should be treated as a development and economic priority, not as a narrow sectoral intervention. He also said national frameworks would only matter if states and local governments turn them into action.

The forum emphasized that early childhood development requires coordination across multiple government sectors, since no single ministry can deliver all the needed services. It also urged states to use the workshop to design practical plans that fit local realities and can be folded into existing planning and budgeting systems.

The report said the governors had formally restated their commitment at an NGF meeting on June 17, 2026. That matters because the forum is framing early childhood investment as part of broader efforts to improve school readiness, learning outcomes, health and long-term economic growth.
