What the report says
Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is marking the 100-day countdown to the 2027 general elections with a public briefing and stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja, according to Premium Times’ report distributed by AllAfrica. The event is scheduled for Tuesday at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre and will be led by INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan, with the commission saying it wants to update the public on preparations for the vote.
The commission said it plans to discuss several operational issues, including the voters’ register, candidate nominations, logistics and steps meant to protect the integrity of the process. The meeting is also intended to bring together political party leaders, security agencies, diplomats, civil society groups, observer organizations, disability rights advocates, religious and traditional leaders, youth groups and media executives. INEC said attendance will be by invitation and the event will be broadcast and streamed publicly.
Premium Times reported that INEC has fixed the presidential and National Assembly elections for 16 January 2027, with governorship and state assembly elections to follow on 6 February 2027. The commission has also published the final list of presidential candidates, with 18 parties fielding nominees. The report identifies President Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra governor Peter Obi among the contenders. The upcoming vote will be the first major nationwide election managed under Amupitan, who became INEC chair in 2025.
