What the report says

The National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) Uganda Campus has launched the first edition of its Cyber Security Awareness Run 2026 in Jinja, with the event opening at Gaddafi Barracks. According to Watchdog Uganda, the launch was led by Deputy Director Arun Sharma, who represented Campus Director Air Commodore Kedar Thaakar, alongside UPDF Jinja Cantonment Commander Maj Gen Emmanuel Kanyesigye.

The organizers described the run as a public awareness effort focused on online safety and the risks linked to digital services. In remarks reported by Watchdog Uganda, Sharma said the campaign is meant to help communities guard against cybercrime such as online fraud, identity theft, cyberbullying and misuse of digital platforms. He also linked the initiative to the growing use of mobile money, online banking and social media, arguing that public awareness is increasingly important as daily life becomes more digital.

Maj Gen Kanyesigye said the run was part of Cyber Security Awareness Month and urged Ugandans to treat digital security as a shared responsibility, especially around mobile money use. The Acting Director of Information Security Services at NITA-Uganda, Johnson Tumusiime, also attended and said cyber threats are rising as more services move online.

Participants came from military and civilian institutions in and around Jinja, and sponsors supported 21km and 10km races. Watchdog Uganda reported that the event included prize winners and medals, while NFSU officials said the campus, opened in 2022, aims to share forensic science expertise in Uganda and beyond.
