New Wamala RPC Takes Office as Police Prioritise Crime Prevention and Operational Challenges

Senior Superintendent of Police Godfrey Achiria has taken office as the new Regional Police Commander for Uganda’s Wamala Region, replacing SSP Martin Okoyo, according to Nile Post. The handover took place on July 31, 2026, after police leadership transfers announced earlier in the month. The ceremony was overseen by Commissioner of Police James Ruhweza from Police Headquarters and brought together senior officers, district leaders and other security stakeholders.

Nile Post reported that the transition came with assurances that Wamala’s overall security situation remains relatively stable, even as police continue to deal with a range of offences. Outgoing commander Okoyo said theft, especially of crops and livestock, defilement, land-related disputes, murder, robbery and growing reports of vehicle theft in Kassanda District remain key concerns. Regional police also pointed to operational constraints that affect policing, including shortages of motorcycles at sub-county stations, the location of Mityana Police Station away from the town centre, an ageing fire truck and land conflicts.

The outgoing commander was moved to Greater Bushenyi Policing Region, while Achiria was transferred from Greater Bushenyi to Wamala. Local officials, including Mityana Resident District Commissioner Joseph Mukiibi, thanked Okoyo for his service and pledged support for the new commander. Ruhweza said police will keep investing in tools such as CCTV, canine units and forensic laboratories to improve crime prevention and investigations. The change in leadership appears aimed at sustaining calm while addressing persistent crime and resource gaps in the region.
