New surgical armour arrives at cancer institute

The Observer reports that the Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI) has received a new shipment of surgical and diagnostic equipment under its partnership with the Republic of Korea. The delivery includes high-definition video endoscopes, surgical sets and other screening tools intended to help patients get diagnosis and treatment at UCI rather than being referred elsewhere when equipment is unavailable. The article says the move comes after years in which some patients traveled long distances to Kampala only to be sent to private facilities for procedures such as endoscopy.

The equipment arrived through the National Cancer Capacity Management Project, known as CANCAP-UG, a joint initiative involving UCI, the Korea Foundation for International Healthcare and the South Korean government. According to the article, the package is also aimed at improving cervical cancer detection and treatment, with items such as radical hysterectomy sets, portable ultrasound machines, HPV DNA test cartridges, Pap smear kits, sterilizing units and audiometry tools. The report adds that some screening and testing devices are meant for use in district and regional health facilities so patients can be assessed closer to home.

UCI officials said the broader goal is to strengthen the institute as a referral and training center. Dr. Nixon Niyonzima said the institute wants patients to be able to receive needed procedures without being turned away for lack of equipment. KOFIH’s country director, Juwang Baik, said the cooperation also includes training for Ugandan health workers. The Ministry of Health’s commissioner for non-communicable diseases, Dr. Charles Oyoo Akiya, was quoted saying that decentralizing cancer services is important because specialist care has long been concentrated in central Uganda.
