What the report says

The Scottish FA and Scottish government have launched a 10-year plan called Project 2035 to grow women’s and girls’ football in Scotland, according to BBC Sport Football. The strategy is backed by £250,000 of government funding this year and is intended to increase participation, improve pathways into the game and help establish Scotland as a stronger force in the women’s sport by 2035.

The plan sets several broad goals, including doubling the number of registered female players and quadrupling attendances and audiences for matches. It also aims for Scotland to qualify regularly for major tournaments, building on the progress seen in recent years. A new taskforce will oversee delivery and includes the Scottish government, the Scottish FA, Scottish Women’s Football, the Scottish Women’s Premier League, PFA Scotland, Sportscotland and Cosla.

SFA chief executive Ian Maxwell said major events can provide wider visibility for the women’s game, while First Minister John Swinney said the project is meant to build on existing growth and expand opportunities for girls across roles in football. BBC reported that the launch comes as participation, attendances and investment continue to rise, but that facilities, volunteer support, coaching routes and player retention remain challenges.

The announcement comes as Scotland’s women prepare for a World Cup play-off against Sweden next month. For the game’s stakeholders, the strategy is significant because it sets long-term targets and formal oversight for a sport that has expanded, but still faces structural hurdles.
