New Neonatal Equipment Brings Hope to Mityana's Overstretched Ssekanyonyi Maternity Ward

Ssekanyonyi Health Centre IV in Mityana District has received neonatal and maternity equipment from the Rotary Club of Mityana, in a move aimed at easing pressure on a facility that is serving a growing number of mothers and newborns. According to Nile Post, the health centre cares for about 22,633 people and handles more than 90 deliveries each month, stretching its limited space, staffing and supplies.

The donation is intended to support delivery services, care for women undergoing caesarean-related procedures, and treatment of newborns, including premature babies and infants born in poor condition. Mityana District Health Officer Dr. Vincent Kawooya said limited equipment has made it difficult for health workers to manage the volume of deliveries efficiently, especially when urgent attention is needed.

The Rotary Club said it selected the facility after an assessment of more than 32 health facilities in the district identified major gaps in equipment and services. Carolyn Taylor, the club’s assistant governor, said the organisation also plans to train health workers on how to use the new equipment properly so it can be put to effective use.

The development comes against a broader backdrop of maternal and newborn health concerns in Mityana District, where officials say there have been stillbirths and maternal deaths in the last financial year. Health authorities also say the district plans to expand maternity space at Ssekanyonyi, but note that equipment alone will not solve challenges linked to staffing and overcrowding.
