What the report says

Fox News reported that new excerpts from a purported ransom note in the Nancy Guthrie kidnapping investigation were read Wednesday on the “Crime Junkie” podcast by Briana Whitney, a former Arizona reporter who covered the case for Phoenix-based AZ Family. The podcast did not release the documents, and a spokesperson said the text has not been independently verified.

According to Fox News, Whitney said the first note was addressed to Savannah and claimed the sender had her mother, Nancy, who was “safe but scared” and would be released after a Bitcoin ransom payment. The excerpt described a seven-day holding period, escalating deadlines and a threat tied to a final deadline. Whitney also read language saying there would be no negotiation and that law enforcement could not help. Fox reported that the note referenced details such as Guthrie’s Apple Watch location and a smashed backyard floodlight, information that may have been known only to investigators and the perpetrator at that stage.

Fox News said Whitney also described a purported second note claiming the kidnappers had misjudged Guthrie’s health and that she died after being taken; that note reportedly ended with an apology. The article also referenced discussion of a “wrench attack” theory that surfaced in May.

Authorities have treated Guthrie’s disappearance from her Tucson, Arizona, home in the early morning of Feb. 1 as an apparent abduction, Fox reported, citing the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI. The publicly known suspect is an unidentified masked intruder seen on recovered Nest doorbell footage. Fox reported rewards in the case total more than $1.2 million, with tips directed to the FBI or Tucson Crime Stoppers.
