New Bundibugyo Ebola Virus Variant Discovered, Offering Critical Insights for Future Outbreak Response

The findings, published in The Lancet, came from the Interdisciplinary Consortium for Epidemic Research and Response and partner institutions, and focus on a virus sample from Uganda’s imported case.

According to the report, genomic analysis found that the virus is distinct from strains associated with earlier Bundibugyo Ebola outbreaks in Uganda in 2007 and DRC in 2012. Instead, it falls within a newly identified group connected to the current cross-border outbreak in Ituri Province and Uganda. The article says the variant has several genetic differences from earlier Bundibugyo Ebola viruses, though researchers noted that further work is needed to understand what those changes mean for disease control, diagnostics, vaccines or treatment.

The research involved Uganda’s Ministry of Health, ICER, Makerere University, DRC’s Institut National de Recherche Biomédicale, Dalhousie University and other partners. As background, DRC’s 2018-2020 Ebola outbreak killed nearly 2,300 people, underscoring the stakes of early detection and surveillance.
