New antibody drug stops aggressive prostate cancer from spreading - ScienceDaily

ScienceDaily, citing material from Umeå University, reported that researchers have developed a fully human antibody that stopped tumor growth and metastatic spread in preclinical studies of aggressive prostate cancer. The work, led by Maréne Landström, professor of pathology at Umeå University’s Department of Medical Biosciences, was published in Signal Transduction and Targeted Therapy and announced on July 20, 2026.

The study focuses on advanced prostate cancer, a form of disease that can move beyond the prostate to sites such as lymph nodes and bones. According to the report, the experimental antibody was designed to interfere with mechanisms linked to cancer cell growth, invasion and spread. The journal reference describes the target as oncogenic TβRI signaling in androgen-independent prostate cancer, a context that is especially important because such cancers can be harder to control with standard hormone-focused approaches.

ScienceDaily reported that the antibody is made entirely from human proteins, a feature the researchers say supports its potential development as a therapeutic drug. The team also suggested that its mechanism could reduce the risk of side effects, though that remains to be tested. Landström emphasized in the source article that the result is still an early step: additional safety studies are needed, followed by regulatory review in Europe or the United States before any patient use.

The project involved Umeå University collaborators, SciLifeLab’s Drug Discovery and Development Platform, Umeå Biotech Incubator and MetaCurUm Biotech AB, with funding from several Swedish research and cancer organizations. Researchers next plan to test whether the same strategy may apply to other solid tumors.
