NEMA Demolishes Four-Unit Building in Lumpeewoo Wetland

What the report says
The National Environment Management Authority has carried out fresh enforcement against wetland encroachment in Lumpeewoo Wetland in Kajjansi, Wakiso District, according to Nile Post. The operation involved demolishing structures built inside the protected area, including a building with four residential units. Officials said some other buildings in the area were also exposed during the exercise, with a few still under construction.
NEMA spokesperson William Lubulwa said the agency is continuing efforts to stop illegal settlement and construction in environmentally sensitive wetlands. He said those affected had been warned before, but some developers went ahead with building anyway. The authority also left some structures standing because related cases are still before court.
The action comes amid broader concerns about pressure on wetlands around Kampala and nearby growing towns, where housing and commercial development has increasingly spread into protected land. Wetlands are widely recognized for helping with water storage, flood control and biodiversity protection, so damage to them can worsen drainage problems and increase flood risk.
Lubulwa urged the public to avoid building in protected wetlands and to verify land status before buying or developing property. NEMA said it will continue enforcing environmental rules to protect wetlands for current and future generations.
