Nebbi PDM Farmers Switch to Cabbage, Onions

What the report says
Thirty Parish Development Model beneficiaries in Nebbi Municipality are being trained to grow cabbage and onions after local officials found that many of the urban farmers who had chosen cassava did not have enough land to carry out that enterprise. According to Nile Post, the training took place on Thursday, October 15, in Nebbi Hill Ward and was led by PDM community-based facilitators. The aim is to help the groups move into crops that mature more quickly and can generate income sooner.
The report says the beneficiaries came from five enterprise groups and had originally planned to do cassava growing and poultry keeping. However, limited farmland and prolonged dry spells in West Nile have made those options difficult, especially for people living in a town setting. Nebbi Municipality production officer and PDM focal person Andrew Yangchon said the shift was meant to support short-term earning opportunities, noting that cabbage and onions can be harvested in about three months, while cassava takes much longer.
Beneficiaries welcomed the adjustment, saying the vegetables could bring faster returns than cassava. Yofesto Okecha, chairperson of the Nebbi Hill PDM SACCO, said follow-up visits showed that many farmers had no gardens for the enterprises they selected. The development comes amid wider concern about PDM loan recovery in Nebbi.
In Nebbi Hill Ward, the article says Shs369 million has been disbursed to 369 beneficiaries, but only Shs1.2 million has been recovered. Officials also said district-wide recovery remains low, with questions raised about beneficiary selection, missing records and the use of some funds outside production activities.

Salam TV meets Bunyoro Elders Ahead of Omumanyi wa Salam TV Bunyoro-Tooro Region Finals By Immam Sadiq Taremwa Salam TV has visited elderly leaders in Bunyoro ahead of the Omumanyi wa Salam TV Bunyoro-Tooro Region Finals, 7th Edition 2026, happening tomorrow at Bwikya Hill, Hoima City, from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM. The Omumanyi wa Salam TV is a quiz competition that Salam TV started in 2021 as a platform where people compete among themselves and win prizes to encourage people to keep thinking and conducting research in various areas. For the last five years, the competition has been conducted in the studios of Salam TV in Kampala. During the 6th Edition, management decided to make it a national platform that can benefit the whole country, extending it to different regions with different prizes and sensitization programs that have touched people's lives. Every edition comes with new ideas and innovations that positively change lives through sensitization and mobilization. The ongoing 7th Edition 2026 has increased the coverage from 6 regions to 8 regions to bring the competition closer to the people for easy access. While in Hoima City making final arrangements, the Managing Director of Salam TV and Salam Charity, Hajji Karim Kaliisa, visited different elders in Hoima, including Hajji Uthuman Kitunzi, one of the elders in the region and a retired Chief Magistrate, Sheikh Badru Balikagira and Sheikh Bitamazire, who have contributed immensely to the development of Islam in the region and beyond. The visits were aimed at informing them about the program and inviting them to witness the Omumanyi wa Salam TV regional winner going home with a fully funded Umrah pilgrimage courtesy of Tawakal Travel and Salam TV. Sheikh Badru Balikagira appreciated the great work done by Salam TV in developing communities and called upon the general public to always support and encourage the station whenever called upon. According to Hajji Kaliisa, the quiz competition and gifts are not the major reason for Omumanyi wa Salam TV, but rather a platform to attract people for socio-economic development through programs such as Smart Community, digital literacy, and religious trainings, among others, that have helped change lives across the country. “We have so far concluded Busoga Region and Eastern Region. After Bunyoro-Tooro Region, we shall head to Northern, West Nile, Ankole-Kigezi, Greater Masaka, Central Region and conclude with the grand finale that always takes place in Kampala, where all regional winners are gathered to compete for major prizes including cars, Hajj pilgrimages, land titles, among others, that completely change people's lives,” Hajji Kaliisa said. He thanked all sponsors who have moved with Salam TV from the previous editions up to the 7th Edition and welcomed more corporate companies to partner with the station for community development and mobilization through sensitization.Nile Post
