What the report says

Nebbi Municipal Council in western Uganda has missed a self-imposed deadline to move heavy trucks off the Nebbi-Pakwach highway, according to Nile Post. The trucks, including tippers and fuel tankers, are still parking along the road while the planned Oryang lorry park in Thatha Division remains undeveloped.

The reported delay has left motorists, pedestrians and boda boda riders dealing with congestion and reduced visibility on a road used by traffic entering and leaving Nebbi town. Local leaders said the roadside parking is narrowing the highway and creating safety concerns, while also limiting the area’s potential revenue from a formal parking facility.

A spokesperson for the Nebbi Tipper Drivers Association said operators were willing to move but had been waiting for the municipality to prepare the new site. Nebbi officials acknowledged the missed deadline and said funding shortages slowed work at Oryang. Howard Musa, the deputy mayor and leader of government business, said the council had now obtained equipment from Nebbi District to grade the site and intends to begin enforcement once the area is ready.

The report also places the issue in the context of broader municipal development plans. Nebbi recently secured World Bank funding for a larger taxi and bus park at the same Oryang location, although that project has not yet started. For now, the trucks remain on the highway while the council says site preparation should begin soon.
