What the report says

Uganda’s National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC) is using its 50th anniversary to spotlight a major shift in education policy, with an emphasis on artificial intelligence, innovation, practical learning and future-ready skills. According to Watchdog Uganda, the centre is framing the milestone as a chance to examine whether the country’s curriculum is keeping pace with rapid technological and economic change.

The main event tied to the anniversary is the 2nd International Conference on Curriculum Development, scheduled for August 20-21, 2026, at Speke Resort and Convention Centre in Munyonyo, Kampala. Watchdog Uganda reported that the conference theme is “Innovative Curriculum Approaches for Sustainable Education in a Globalised World” and that more than 700 physical and virtual delegates are expected, including curriculum experts, researchers, policymakers, educators, assessment bodies and development partners.

NCDC Director Dr. Bernadette Nambi Karuhanga said education systems must focus not only on what learners know, but on how they apply knowledge. She argued that schools need to build creativity, collaboration, adaptability and problem-solving, while also teaching students to use technology ethically and responsibly. The conference is set to cover areas such as ICT and AI, competency-based education, TVET, indigenous knowledge, climate change, entrepreneurship, inclusivity and teacher training.

Watchdog Uganda also reported that 77 papers were accepted from 130 submissions after peer review, with contributions from scholars and practitioners in more than 11 countries. Acting Education and Sports Minister Dr. John Chrysestom Muyingo backed the push for hands-on education, saying Uganda needs a system that turns learning into innovation and economic opportunity.
