NCBA Bank Uganda Deepens Community Impact Through Makerere Marathon Partnership

What the report says
NCBA Bank Uganda has renewed its partnership with the Makerere Marathon, with proceeds from the 2026 edition earmarked to buy assistive technologies and learning equipment for Makerere University’s Disability Support Unit. According to Nile Post, the bank framed the collaboration as part of its wider commitment to education, healthy living and community development.
The marathon, hosted by the Makerere University Endowment Fund, drew more than 8,000 participants, including students, alumni, staff, corporate teams, elite runners and members of the public. The event was held under the theme “Run the Hills for the Future” and featured a full marathon, half marathon, shorter races and an inclusive wheelchair challenge. It started and finished at Freedom Square, Makerere University.
NCBA Bank Uganda Executive Director Julius Konyani said the bank sees partnerships of this kind as a practical way to create lasting social impact. He said support for Makerere goes beyond event sponsorship because of the university’s long-standing role in developing human capital in Uganda and across Africa. The bank also linked the initiative to its broader corporate social investment agenda, which includes education, youth empowerment, sports, entrepreneurship, financial inclusion and environmental sustainability.
More broadly, the partnership highlights how university-led sporting events can be used to raise funds while promoting community engagement and healthier lifestyles. A broader context note: corporate support for university marathons and similar charity races is increasingly common in Uganda and elsewhere, as institutions look for fundraising models that combine visibility, participation and social benefit.
