NCBA backs education and community development through Makerere Run

NCBA Bank Uganda has renewed its support for Makerere University’s annual marathon, using the event to highlight its backing for education, health and community development. According to The Independent Uganda, the sixth edition of the Makerere Marathon took place on September 27 and drew more than 8,000 participants, including students, alumni, staff, corporate teams, athletes and members of the public.

The race was organized by the Makerere University Endowment Fund under the theme “Run the Hills for the Future,” with routes including a full marathon, half marathon, shorter races and a wheelchair challenge. The event began and ended at Freedom Square and was presented as both a sporting activity and a fundraiser for university community programmes.

NCBA Executive Director Julius Konyani said the bank sees the partnership as part of its broader social investment agenda. He said money raised this year will help the Makerere University Disability Support Unit by providing assistive technologies and learning equipment, and will also contribute to support for economically disadvantaged students. The report notes that NCBA previously pledged Shs1.45 billion over five years for the marathon and related projects.
