NBA fines Clippers $30m, suspends several executives in Kawhi Leonard probe

The case centers on claims that the Clippers helped arrange off-court income opportunities and covered personal expenses for Leonard, in ways the league said violated its rules.

According to the NBA, owner Steve Ballmer was suspended for one year from all league and team activities. Team president of business operations Gillian Zucker received a one-year suspension without pay, and basketball operations president Lawrence Frank was suspended for six months without pay. Leonard was fined $700,000, and the league also banned Dennis Robertson, Leonard’s uncle and former business manager, from doing business with league teams for five years. The penalties were described as final and binding by the NBA and the players’ association.

The Clippers rejected the findings and questioned both the conclusions and the fairness of the probe, saying they would challenge the decision. Leonard also denied knowing of any plan to bypass salary-cap rules, while saying he accepted responsibility for mistakes within his inner circle.
